  • In developing his design for On the Map, artist Jari 'WERC' Alvarez wanted to capture "man's and machine's power reaching beyond what is possible." WERC drew inspiration from the San Diego community, as well as members of the Teen Art Group of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego to create the piece. The mural is rich in references to San Diego's historic contributions to aeronautics, featuring imagery of female aviators and engineers, as well as legends like Glenn Curtiss and Lincoln Beachey.
