Through a collaboration between the National City-based nonprofit ARTS (A Reason to Survive) and the Sweetwater High School District, students from seven different south bay high schools had the chance to practice design thinking and create prototypes for seating and environmental designs for SAN. As a result of the students’ research into the airport and its customers, they developed concepts and spaces that accommodate a wide range of types of travelers. Students gave special consideration to the need for flexibility in seating options, ways to highlight San Diego’s history and culture, and imaginative areas for families to play together.
