Descending from a lineage of art historians, Nikko Mueller is a San Diego-based artist and professor at Southwestern Community College. His work focuses on the interplay of color and perception. Faced with personal and societal upheavals during the financial crisis of 2008, Mueller was inspired to create depictions based on the breakdown and reconstruction of fundamental systems designed to provide stability in our lives. Through a meticulous process of painting, folding, and stretching, he transforms simple geometric shapes into new forms—some resolving, others fragmented. Mueller has continued to evolve this style, resulting in canvases that undergo a similar disruption, representing his exploration of relationships across borders, our reliance on each other, and the larger systems at play.
