Performing Arts Residency Program

The Performing Arts Residency Program provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that simultaneously enriches the airport environment and cultivates the regional performing arts community. This opportunity is a process-oriented residency program open to contemporary performing arts in all disciplines—dance, music, theater, as well as cross-disciplinary digital media.

Ongoing Special Performances & Concert Series

The Arts Program has organized a new schedule of singer-songwriters, composers, musicians of all genres, dancers, and theatrical/oratorical performances. Ensemble concerts take place every third Thursday of the month from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Terminal 2 Baggage Claim (pre-security) or Sunset Cove (post-security). Piano concerts take place every Friday from 11:30 a.m-1:30 p.m. at Sunset Cove.

Launched in 2016, the Arts Program’s Performing Arts Residency provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that simultaneously enriches the airport experience for customers and cultivates the regional performing arts community. Airport patrons are allowed the opportunity to witness performing artists as they create and refine their project, inspired by the airport environment, throughout the duration of the residency.  Over the course of San Diego Dance Theatre’s six-month stay, spectators can expect contemporary dance, music, and interactive encounters to enliven the San Diego travel experience. Founded in 1972 as a 501(c)3 professional modern dance company, San Diego Dance Theater (SDDT) has for 47 years enriched the cultural life of San Diego through countless shows and residencies, and training for young dancers. Jean Isaacs was appointed Artistic Director in 1997 and under her direction, SDDT has earned it's reputation as a company committed to expanding access to the stage for dancers of many nationalities, races, ages, and physical abilities. SDDT continues to offer excellent performances and programming throughout San Diego County and beyond.

Christopher Monteverde & Lilly Winwood: Terminal 2 West, Gate 38 (Post-Security) @ San Diego International Airport

Special Performance presented in partnership with Ciari Guitars and SAN Innovation Lab.

Lilly Winwood, daughter of classic rock legend Steve Winwood, chronicles her journey through earnest coming-of-age narratives on her debut EP, Silver Stage. With a sound that—much like her father’s work—offers an English take on traditional American roots music, and backed by Nashville-via-Australia producer Joshua Barber (Gotye, Archie Roach), the songs on Silver Stage blend world-weary vocals, ethereal twang, and no-nonsense bravado to create an EP that establishes Winwood as a writer that’s wise beyond her years. It’s no surprise that Lilly sounds at home on Silver Stage, considering she’s played music for most of her life. Shortly after she began touring at age sixteen, she recorded a duet of “Higher Love” with her dad for a 2016 Hershey’s commercial, which Adweek lauded as “a true anthem spot.” In 2017, Lilly hit the road as the support act for Steve Winwood’s Spring Tour. Hailing from Nashville, Chris Monteverde was awarded CMA of Texas Rising Star for 2015, Best Americana Act at the Roswell Film and Music Festival in May 2017, and CMA of Texas Album of the Year 2017. He has been writing and playing music since age 13, and has performed widely with bands including Jabberwalkie, Lies A Bloom, and Navasota, which was the last band to be signed to ABC Dunhill records (Lou Adler) in late 1974 and produced their first album with the three-time Grammy Award-winning Gary Katz, who produced the likes of Steely Dan, Chaka Kahn and Joe Cocker. The SAN Innovation Lab was launched in 2018 to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. As a part of the 2019 group of innovators, Ciari Guitars is a current offering a guitar kiosk featuring the world’s first and only foldable, travel guitar where travelers can play and/or listen to music while relaxing.

Special concert series to celebrate San Diego Comic-Con.

Dressed in a shiny top hat and tails Gramophone Gregory peers though round spectacles at a modern world that moves far too fast. His time machine is a pair of portable 1920s gramophones displayed on top of an antique mahogany wooden radio console. Special concert series to celebrate San Diego Comic-Con.

Nico Hueso will be playing all your favorite pop culture tunes from video game scores to movie soundtracks.

  Nico received his Bachelor's of Music in performance from Kennesaw State University while studying under Atlanta Symphony violist Cathy Lynn. Mr. Hueso has also studied with renowned performers Helen Kim, Juan Ramirez, Francisco Caban, David Grimal, Elias Goldstein, and Henry Hutchinson. Hueso has participated in several prestigious music festivals including the Pablo Casals Chamber Music Festival in Prades, France, the Festival International de Huapango in Panuco, Mexico, the Programa Musica de Camera para Niños, FOSJA in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the GMEA All College Orchestra 2011 as principal violist and soloist. Mr. Hueso has performed in master classes with the Ying Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, Pacifica Quartet, and Chilingirian Quartet, and he has been a finalist in the MTNA Chamber music competition. In addition to classical viola, Hueso freelances and records in multiple genres as a violinist, guitarist, & electric bassist; he has been a guest soloist with the rock band Kansas in 2011 for their Symphony Tour, has performed with Placido Domingo, rock band Disturbed, members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitclán & Nuevo Tecalitclán, tribute groups commemorating artists such as Otis Redding, and has collaborated with a number of up-and-coming pop and country artists, lending his skills as both a composer and studio musician. In addition to keeping a rigorous teaching and freelancing schedule, Hueso enjoys arranging, improvising and performing chamber music with his colleagues from Atlanta, San Diego, and Puerto Rico Symphonies.

The SAN Innovation Lab was launched in 2018 to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. As a part of the 2019 group of innovators, Ciari Guitars is a current offering a guitar kiosk featuring the world’s first and only foldable, travel guitar where travelers can play and/or listen to music while relaxing.

Special concert series to celebrate San Diego Comic-Con.

Dressed in a shiny top hat and tails Gramophone Gregory peers though round spectacles at a modern world that moves far too fast. His time machine is a pair of portable 1920s gramophones displayed on top of an antique mahogany wooden radio console. Slowly hand-cranking up the spring-loaded “talking machines.” With 78 rpm records from the 1920s all the way up to the 1950s this one man portable performance will have you dancing your troubles away.

Special concert series to celebrate San Diego Comic-Con.

Nico Hueso will be playing all your favorite pop culture tunes from video game scores to movie soundtracks.

 

Nico received his Bachelor’s of Music in performance from Kennesaw State University while studying under Atlanta Symphony violist Cathy Lynn. Mr. Hueso has also studied with renowned performers Helen Kim, Juan Ramirez, Francisco Caban, David Grimal, Elias Goldstein, and Henry Hutchinson. Hueso has participated in several prestigious music festivals including the Pablo Casals Chamber Music Festival in Prades, France, the Festival International de Huapango in Panuco, Mexico, the Programa Musica de Camera para Niños, FOSJA in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the GMEA All College Orchestra 2011 as principal violist and soloist. Mr. Hueso has performed in master classes with the Ying Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, Pacifica Quartet, and Chilingirian Quartet, and he has been a finalist in the MTNA Chamber music competition.

In addition to classical viola, Hueso freelances and records in multiple genres as a violinist, guitarist, & electric bassist; he has been a guest soloist with the rock band Kansas in 2011 for their Symphony Tour, has performed with Placido Domingo, rock band Disturbed, members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitclán & Nuevo Tecalitclán, tribute groups commemorating artists such as Otis Redding, and has collaborated with a number of up-and-coming pop and country artists, lending his skills as both a composer and studio musician. In addition to keeping a rigorous teaching and freelancing schedule, Hueso enjoys arranging, improvising and performing chamber music with his colleagues from Atlanta, San Diego, and Puerto Rico Symphonies.
