Kristina Wong Projects: Terminal 2 West (Pre-Security) @ San Diego International Airport
Sep 6 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

The Performing Arts Residency Program provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that simultaneously enriches the airport experience for customers and cultivates the regional performing arts community.

Kristina Wong Projects is a performance art collective consisting of internationally renowned performance artist Kristina Wong, playwright and actor Samuel Valdez, and poet and DJ Kuttin Kandi. During their six-month residency, they will be creating The Standby Room, exploring and interpreting stories of waiting, anticipation, and redemption. This “pop-up” waiting room will be constructed out of sewn fabric and filled with stories collected from travelers at the airport. The collective is exploring the airport as a symbolic purgatory between past and future, where engagement is fleeting and rarely meaningful. The Standby Room offers a fun, visually captivating and immersive experience for passengers to tell stories of what is on the other end of their travels.

Visitors are invited to help build the waiting room by joining in the sewing circle or sharing their stories of #WhatAreWeReallyWaitingFor

Figure of Speech Workshop with Michelle Montjoy: Terminal 2 East, Food Court (Post-Security) @ San Diego International Airport
Sep 6 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

San Diego artist and educator, Michelle Montjoy, will lead a knitting workshop for passengers using table-top looms. Her installation in the Terminal 2 East Food Court displays her intricately knitted sculptural environments made from graphic t-shirts.

The Temporary Exhibitions Program supports the airport’s mission of serving as a gateway to the region by showcasing the work of regional visual artists, cultural institutions, educational organizations, and community groups. In a continuing effort to further enhance the airport experience for the traveling public, The SAN Arts Program will feature programming tied to the 2018 temporary exhibition Figure of Speech.
