Dia de los Muertos Giant Puppet Parade: Terminal 2 West, Baggage Claim (Pre-Security) @ San Diego International Airport

The San Diego Guild of Puppetry has been creating giant puppet parades in the community since 2004 and its Dia de los Muertos giants are the creations of Felix Diaz, his family, and his students. The Day of the Dead parades, organized by Diaz, can range in size from a handful of participants to hundreds. The puppets for these parades are primarily of skulls, skeletons and butterflies, which represent the spirits of the departed returning to join their families for the celebration.

Throughout history, giant puppets have played important religious, ceremonial, and social roles: petitioning supernatural forces, bringing different cultures’ legends and customs to life, celebrating pivotal community events. With roots in sacred iconography, these giant figures, by their sheer size, attract attention, inspire awe, and build a strong sense of the power of community and collaborative effort in participants and onlookers alike.

The San Diego Guild of Puppetry produces an exciting array of high quality programs, including performances for all ages by local and touring artists, education outreach programming, and a variety of special events, often in collaboration with other arts, culture and community organizations. The San Diego Guild of Puppetry is the primary resource for the puppetry arts in San Diego County, and will be celebrating their 25th anniversary as a nonprofit in February 2019.

The Performing Arts Residency Program provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that simultaneously enriches the airport experience for customers and cultivates the regional performing arts community.

Kristina Wong Projects is a performance art collective consisting of internationally renowned performance artist Kristina Wong, playwright and actor Samuel Valdez, and
poet and DJ Kuttin Kandi. During their six-month residency, they will be creating The Standby Room, exploring stories of waiting, anticipation, and redemption. This “pop-up” waiting room will be constructed out of sewn fabric and filled with hand-written stories collected from travelers. The group is exploring the airport as a transitional space that bridges past and future, where engagement is fleeting. The Standby Room offers a fun, visually captivating and immersive experience for passengers to tell stories of what is on the other end of their travels.

Visitors are invited to help build the waiting room by joining in the sewing circle or sharing their stories of #WhatAreWeReallyWaitingFor
