Airport Arts Draft Master Plan Available for Community Review and Feedback

The draft Airport Arts Master Plan is now available for community review and feedback.

Last fall hundreds of community members, airport customers, arts professionals and business leaders had an opportunity to share their perspective on the future vision, goals and directions for the Arts Program at San Diego International Airport. Arts Program staff and the consultant team have been steadily working to incorporate the feedback while conducting research, administrative review, and scoping of potential future arts opportunities at SAN.

The draft represents information gathered using multiple tools for both internal and external input which included:

  • Benchmarking of programs, policies and practices with peer airport and transit arts programs, and the arts sector at large
  • Internal stakeholder engagement via interviews and roundtables with Airport Authority leadership and management throughout the organization, as well as members of the Airport Arts Advisory Committee
  • External community stakeholder interviews and roundtables with those in the San Diego region’s arts & cultural sector and related fields, including the military and arts & healing and educational communities, and business leaders
  • More than 500 intercept surveys of travelers and airport patrons as well as additional input from the general public through an online survey

The Airport Arts Master Plan has multiple functions. First, it is a master plan to guide the current and future Arts Program activities at SAN. This portion includes contextual information as well as recommendations for the Public Art Program, Performing Arts Program and Temporary Exhibitions; in addition to Engagement, Communications, and Evaluation. Second, this Arts Master Plan contains a Site and Opportunities Plan which is intended to be included with design-build materials for the proposed Airport Development Plan (ADP) to provide technical guidance for arts projects and infrastructure in the potential new Terminal One and its related facilities. Third, a summary of recommended updates to the Airport Authority’s Art Policy (8.50) is provided in the Appendices.

Depending on your orientation to and relationship with the SAN Arts Program, you may be more interested in some areas of the Arts Master Plan than others. We don’t anticipate that most people will necessarily read it all. It should be noted that recommendations in the Site and Opportunities Plan are contingent on the required environmental review and Airport Authority Board approval of the ADP (contract, schedule, scope). The final designs of any future terminal and/or facilities are conceptual at this stage and references to such facilities are based on information available at this time for the purpose of the Master Plan’s creation.

Following a 30-day community feedback period the Plan will be reviewed by the Airport Arts Advisory Committee and presented to the Airport Authority Board for review and final approval of its adoption. The Plan, in its current draft state, does not include enhanced graphics, images, or visual examples, which will later be incorporated into the final design to augment the text content.

Your feedback is important to us. Please help us by considering responding to the following questions:

  1. How do the Vision and Goals as identified on pages 17 and 18 of the draft plan reflect the impact the Arts Program can have at the airport, in the region’s arts and culture community, and on the region at large?
  2. Can you identify three things that excite you about any aspect of the plan – outcomes, recommendations, future directions, etc.?
  3. If you are part of an arts, culture or community organization how would you see your organization partnering with the Airport Arts Program?
  4. Did we miss anything that you feel is important?

These questions are meant as starting points and we would like to receive other feedback in relation to the draft plan that you may like to share by replying here:  SANartsplan@gmail.com. The deadline to submit comments is 11:59 pm on Sunday, September 2, 2018.  Emails will not be responded to, however you may receive follow up correspondence in certain instances where clarification is needed or requested.

The public comment period has closed.

Thank you, and thank you for your interest in the San Diego International Airport Arts Program.
